Unbilled WIP for litigators and chambers

Legal work ages out quietly when WIP lives in notebooks. FirmRix Legal Practice OS treats unbilled work in progress as a first-class view by matter and by lawyer so fee invoices reflect reality.

WIP is not a task board

Kanban columns do not tell you what is billable. Matters carry fees, disbursements and stages. Unbilled WIP answers “what have we done that is not yet on a fee note?” — the question partners actually ask.

By matter and by lawyer

Capacity planning needs both cuts. A matter can look quiet while one lawyer’s WIP is high. Legal Practice OS keeps those dimensions available without rebuilding a spreadsheet each month.

From WIP to fee invoice

When you raise fees, the invoice should clear the WIP it covers. Disbursements stay attached to the matter. Clients can receive portal-visible invoices without seeing internal WIP queues.

Not e-filing

Unbilled WIP is practice management. Court e-filing still happens in the court’s portal. FirmRix owns the matter economics; the court owns the filing channel.

Questions

Is unbilled WIP the same as accounts receivable?
No. WIP is work not yet invoiced. Receivables are invoices not yet paid. Both matter; they answer different questions.
Can solo advocates use this?
Yes. Even a single lawyer benefits from matter-scoped WIP instead of reconstructing the month from chat history.
