Matter management versus generic project software

Law firms sold “project management” get tasks, boards and due dates that do not speak legal. Matters carry parties, practice area, hearings and unbilled WIP. That is a different product.

Matters are not tasks

A matter has stages such as Intake, Filed, In Hearing, Awaiting Order and Settled. Parties, case numbers, courts and forums belong on the matter, not in a description field.

Court calendar, not a team calendar

Hearing dates and filing deadlines generate from the matter. Recurring deadlines are first-class. A generic calendar does not know a hearing from an internal standup.

Unbilled WIP

Legal work ages out quietly. Unbilled WIP by matter and by lawyer is how chambers see what has been done but not invoiced — fees and disbursements included.

Questions

Is Legal Practice OS a courtroom e-filing system?
No. It is practice management: matters, parties, court calendar, documents, fee billing and a client portal. It does not replace court e-filing portals.
