Matter management versus generic project software
Law firms sold “project management” get tasks, boards and due dates that do not speak legal. Matters carry parties, practice area, hearings and unbilled WIP. That is a different product.
Matters are not tasks
A matter has stages such as Intake, Filed, In Hearing, Awaiting Order and Settled. Parties, case numbers, courts and forums belong on the matter, not in a description field. Generic project software collapses all of that into cards that never speak legal.
Court calendar, not a team calendar
Hearing dates and filing deadlines generate from the matter. Recurring deadlines are first-class. A generic calendar does not know a hearing from an internal standup, so chambers lose the morning to reconciliation.
Unbilled WIP
Legal work ages out quietly. Unbilled WIP by matter and by lawyer is how chambers see what has been done but not invoiced — fees and disbursements included. That view is why Legal Practice OS exists as its own product.
Portal without opening chambers
Clients can receive matter-scoped documents and invoices through a portal with separate credentials. They never inherit lawyer permissions. Desk presence is invited separately when you need to sit on the work live.
